I'd been thinking about a hair transplant for a long time. My crown started thinning around age 22, and by around 25 it had thinned noticeably enough that friends noticed. I used minoxidil and finasteride for about 2 years, which stopped the progression to some extent, but I wanted to fill in the sparse areas. While looking into where to get it done abroad, a Korean friend recommended a clinic in Korea. With my friend's help, I found some well-reputed clinics in Seoul and carefully checked reviews and before/after photos on Reddit and Korean websites. Dr. Ko had good reviews and excellent before/after photos, so I liked him. The consultation process went smoothly. Dr. Ko speaks fluent English, replied to emails promptly, and answered all my questions clearly. I was able to resolve my questions through a video call. (By that point I already had some understanding of the transplant process, donor-area care, and common risks, but it was still nice to be able to see him and talk directly.) During the video call, the doctor asked me to show him my hair on camera, and he explained in detail the estimated number of grafts to be transplanted and what to expect on the day of surgery. Based on what I'd researched, I thought I'd have to shave my whole head, but I liked that this clinic specializes in a non-shaven FUE method. It seemed like no one would notice I'd had a hair transplant unless I told them myself. I stayed in Korea for about a week and visited the hospital three times: for a pre-op checkup, on the day of surgery, and for a post-op follow-up. The day before surgery, I met Dr. Ko to confirm the final graft count and cost, and to check for any potential scalp issues. After that, a staff member explained the surgical process, aftercare, and what to expect over the following months in detail (I also received materials with all the information). I don't speak Korean, but many of the hospital staff spoke good English, so I had no trouble communicating at all. That day, Dr. Ko prescribed aftercare medication, and a staff member accompanied me to the pharmacy, which made getting the medication much easier. The next day, I finally had the surgery. It took about 4 hours. Dr. Ko personally handled everything from graft extraction to implantation, and several team members assisted during surgery and helped keep me comfortable. The doctor explained each step in detail, kept checking in to see if I was okay, and explained everything in an easy-to-understand way, so I felt at ease throughout the whole surgery. Nothing unexpected happened during the surgery at all. First they did the graft extraction, then after a short rest, they moved on to implantation. During the procedure, they bandaged the graft-extraction area, and afterward they explained the aftercare method in detail. They also gave me an English-language booklet with post-surgery care instructions and FAQs. For reference, since this surgery was only for the crown area, I can't speak to their work on hairlines or other areas. The day after surgery, I visited the hospital again, where the staff member in charge removed the bandage, washed my hair, and answered my last questions about the procedure and the medications I needed to take. They also run a WhatsApp account so I can reach out to Dr. Ko or the clinic staff with any questions even after I return to the US. So far, everything has gone smoothly.
